LOCAL RUNNER HAPPENINGS

Kalamazoo Area/Battle Creek Road Runners turned out in droves for the PeacockStrut 10k/5k to earn final points towards our Club Championship Series. Not only did two of our KAR ladies win overall titles as mentioned earlier, but a number of our members brought home age group awards, many of our members participated in one or both of the races and even the kids run was won by one of our very youngest KAR members: nine year-old Michael Sexton won the Peacock StrutKids Caper for the 2 nd consecutive year in row (watch out mom!) KAR/BCRR members entering the winners circle and earning age group plaques in the 10k were: Matt Babbitt (1 st), Bob Smola (1 st), Steve Rice (3 rd), Jay Campbell (1 st), Mike Yarbrough (2 nd) and Dean Wells,( 2 nd). Great runs BrianCampbell, Max Sine, George Granger, Fred Colbert and Steve Penix! In the 5k, KAR/BCRR age group award winners were: Cindy Comer (1 st), Tina Hayward (1 st), Paul Foster (3 rd), Bob Smola (2 nd), Vince McCurdy (2 nd), Jay Campbell (2 nd), Bruce Watson (1 st) and Xavier Cook (2 nd). Awesome Runs Brian Campbell, Paul Stevens, George Granger, Steve Rice and Fred Colbert. Seeing Double? No, it isn’t a mistake! Several members ran both events including Bob Smola, Steve Rice, Jay Campbell, George Granger and Fred Colbert. By the way, we always knew that Fred Colbert was a running machine, but on Saturday he proved it once and for all. Not only did Fred double in the Peacock Strut Events, but then he and Xavier Cook took off for South Bend to participate in a 6-mile benefit run to show support for a friend!

Forty-threeGazelles, Gnus and Impalas of the Marathon Training Group took off down the Kal-Haven trail early Saturday morning on their final 20+ miler. Now its taper time-you know you can do it! Special thanks goes to KAR PresDave Walch for helping out with water stops and transportation. Great pace setting Audrey Hill and Sherry Selby! Cindy Owen, Isaac Jeganathan, Monica Martin, Lori Synder, Tim Bredahl, Tammy Mills and Missy Behnke are all officially ready to tackle their very first marathon. Angela Simcox wins the team spirit award. By the way, Angela is not only a marathoner, but an extremely gifted vocalist and has used her talent in performances and music ministry both near and abroad!

Last of all – Watch out – it’s in the water! At least 4 of our KAR members (that we are aware of) are going to be brand new parents in the coming months! Lots of future runners!!! And we thought the Borgess Kids Run 2004 turnout was large-wait until Borgess Kids Run 2010 rolls around!
