Weekly Rundown

September 15, 2004

HELLO KALAMAZOO AREA RUNNERS, BATTLE CREEK ROAD RUNNERS and RUNNING FRIENDS!

It is with great regret that we must announce that we are losing one of our dedicated Kalamazoo Area Runner Board member teams. Our Co-Treasurers, Rollin and Crystal Richman have tendered their resignation from the Board of Kalamazoo Area Runners effective October 1, 2004 due to the magnitude of Rollin’s international business travel. Rollin and Crystal will continue to be involved with KAR in a different capacity and will continue to provide us with local marathon results. We appreciate all they have done to faithfully serve the running community over the years and wish them the very best in their future endeavors.

The Executive Board is also pleased to announce the appointment of Ralph Meyer as Treasurer beginning October 1 st. He will assume Rollin and Crystal’s duties during the course of the next month. Please join us in welcoming Ralph to our leadership team. The official election meeting when members cast their vote on the leadership team will be held in March of 2005 at our Annual Election Meeting and Party.

The joint KAR/BCRR Gull Lake Runs are back the first Saturday of every month! The first run around Gull Lake will be held October 2. Meet at the Gull Lake Café at 8:00 am for this scenic run. Best of all, there is a coffee social after!!! For this first run, we ask that you notify Toni or Pat Galligan at jogntoni@jasnetworks.net if you plan on attending so they can determine needed course support.

Dances with Dirt X is now history and Kalamazoo/Battle Creek Area runners rocked the results! 303teams completed this rugged 100k Relay with the top 50 receiving team awards. Four of our local teams, all sporting KAR members (highlighted in red), finished in the winner’s circle based on handicap-adjusted times. Our top local finisher was the speedy team of Alison Wolf, Dave Walch, Steve Hicks, Matt Hester and Mike Holfinger. Their team, We Don’t Need No Stinkin Bridges finished 9 th overall with a handicap-adjusted time of 7:37:51. Following not too far behind in 14 th place was the spirited Still Dumb as Hell and Can’t Say No team of Tina Hayward, Teresa Xaundria, Bonnie Sexton, Dan Black and Charlie Crouch with an adjusted time of 7:42:08. Still Dumb as Hell and Can’t Say No, thanks to the efforts of the talented team pilot Charlie Broberg, also won honorable mention for team spirit with their Patriotic theme in memory of September 11. Right on their heals in 15 th place was the tough Team Squirrel &Crossbones. This fleety team made up of speedsters Mindy Kuehl, Ken Fouts, Rob Nicey, Tom Cross and Terry Hutchins finished in an adjusted time of 7:44:28. Our fourth local top 50-finisher was SPLAT who placed an awesome 44 th. SPLAT was comprised of Vince McCurdy, Rollin Richman, Michael Schoenfeld, GarySmith and Scott Minor and they finished with an adjusted time of 8:13:50. Awesome runs all – way to go Kalamazoo! See the LOCAL RUNNER HAPPENINGS section below to see how our other local teams and yes, ultra runner, fared!

The Grape Lake 5k Race also took place this Saturday on its fast course. The winner of the women’s division was Julie Wyrwa with a time of 20:06 and the men’s winner was Aaron Lane-Davies with a time of 17:07. Awesome job. More on KAR/BCRR participants below.

GROUP RUNS

Saturday, September 18

The Gazelle Sports/KAR Marathon Training Program meets today at 7:00 am at the Kal-Haven Trailhead. The Gazelles, Gnus and Impalas will all be completing their final 20 and 22 milers before they begin their long-awaited taper! Let Lindsay Steinberg know if you are able to volunteer to meet and drop off your vehicle in Berlimont! If there are enough vehicles to transport program participants back to the trailhead, the run will be a straight shot out (which is definitely more fun!).

The SHufflers will be meeting at the Milham road entrance of Bicentennial Trail at 7:00 am Saturday for any distance you would like to run. The SHufflers will begin their formal marathon training program in January.

LOCAL RUNNER HAPPENINGS

Fifteen local teams and one local Ultra Runner (that we are aware of) survived the 10 th Anniversary of Dances With Dirt 100k Relay and 50k Ultra. KAR’s Peter Burrill completed his very first Ultra in a time of 5:55 – awesome job on an extremely challenging course! In addition to the team and Ultra runners, KAR’s Tom Schwab was live on the scene as a volunteer at Hell Creek Ranch while Charlie Broberg used his talent to help Still Dumb as Hell and Can’t Say No win team spirit honorable mention by decorating the KAR Road Trip Suburban! Great job Charlie! All of our local teams did awesome – here is how they finished based on handicap adjusted times and places (KAR/BCRR Members are highlighted in red; also we know there may have been some last minute team changes, so we apologize if you are not on there and you were a team member – let us know and we will make the correction next time!)

Always a fall favorite, the Grape Lake 5k race also drew strong KAR/BCRR participation and yielded age group award winners as well. Entering the age group winners circle were Cindy Comer (1 st), Donna Oas (1 st), Matt Babbitt (1 st) Bruce Watson (1 st) and Xavier Cook (3 rd). Great runs Kathy Young, Bob Smola, Dean Wells and Renny Oas! Congratulations on all your fine performances.

Battle Creek Road Runners Wayne Young and Keith Roberts demonstrated their dedicated support of a good friend. The twosome drove to Madison, Wisconsin this past weekend with another buddy to watch former Battle Creek Road Runner, Jim Pearl, complete his first Ironman Triathlon. The full story is to come and definitely worth reading – thank you for sharing Wayne and Keith!

KEEP RUNNING!
