Weekly Rundown for July 7, 2004

Kindleberger 5K! If you missed Lindsay’s Race or the Schoolcraft Firecracker 5- mile this past Saturday, there is another upcoming opportunity to earn Club Championship Series points. The Kindleberger Summer Festival 5k is this coming Saturday, July 10. The race begins at 8:00 am at Kindleberger Park with registration/check in from 6:45 – 7:45 am. For the first time, this race has become a high tech “chip race.” See www.kindleberger.org or www.greatlakeschampionchip.com for more information and on-line registration.

Lindsay's Race The rains held off for the 324 participants in this year’s Lindsay's Race 5k Run/Walk in Richland. The men’s winner , with a time of 16:39, was Justin Todd of Scotts while the women’s winner , with a time of 19:52 was Amanda Portis of Portage. To see all the results, visit www.classicrace.com. To see how some of our KAR members fared, scroll on down to the Local Runner Happenings section below.

Schoolcraft Firecracker 5M Run simultaneously, the Schoolcraft Firecracker 5-mile provided a second opportunity to race in the Kalamazoo Area. Although inclement weather held off for the race, rumor has it that the Fireworks were displayed amidst rain and thunderstorms! The men’s winner was Justin Gillette in 25:31 while the women’s race was won by Kara Barone. [Results]

Please note the correction below to the dates of the Gazelle Sports/Downtown Sidewalk Sales – They are scheduled for July 22, 23, 24, not July 15, 16, 17 as indicated last week See you there for some great deals!

Our next WMU track workout will be Tuesday, July 13. Steve Hicks will be the group leader.

The Gazelle Sports/Kalamazoo Area Runners Marathon Training Group program is shuffling things up a little. The Impala’s and Gnus will be running 11 and 13-mile long runs while the Gazelles will be attempting to flee the cheetahs to test out their marathon pace via a 10-mile pace run. Meet at Gazelle Sports at 7:00 for a safari adventure into northern jungle territory.

Here's what's coming up...

LOCAL RUNNER HAPPENINGS
Congratulations to all those who took a break from backyard barbecue’s (for those who had a long enough break in the weather to attempt lighting the grill), parades and fireworks to participate in Lindsay’s Race 5k and the Schoolcraft Firecracker 5-mile this past Saturday.

Lindsay’ Race produced a number of KAR age group award winners including Teresa Xaundria, Cindy Owen, Cindy Comer, EricAustin, Ken Fouts, John Tecca, Bob Byers and our good friend Charlie Broberg. Looks like the Cindy’s stacked this race! Way to go all! Good run Chelsey White. Tammy Barkovich and Shannon Kelly. It’s ok, Cheryl White, Lindsay’s Race is a great event to skip Marathon Training for. There were way too many choices this weekend. Judy Way recovered from the Bayshore Marathon to find her speed with an awesome 5k time – great job!

Over in Schoolcraft, several other KAR members were on the scene at the Schoolcraft Firecracker 5-mile. Age group award winners included Carrie Long, Carrie Hybels, Tina Hayward, Steve Long and our very own webmaster, Jay Campbell. The Carrie’s dominated this event for sure-is there a pattern here? Good race Bob Smola, Steve Brown and Steve Pennix.

Rob Nicey and Matt Henry were spotted at the Kal-Haven Trail this past week, but on wheels! It was great catching up with Matt who also provided an update on Michelle Post. Michelle is one of the area’s top female marathoners and although we miss her at training this year, she is working up in the UP for the summer and is fitting in some good running. You have to love the portability of our sport! It was great meeting and chatting with Marty Feilen at the track Tuesday. We finally know who you are now, Monica Martin. We are still wondering if Lindsay Steinberg, Mike Nock and crew made it off the track before being engulfed by lightning, thunder and torrential downpours Tuesday.
