Kal-Haven Trail Race Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

General Race Information
What time does the race start?

The solo race starts at 8:00am and the Relay race starts at 9:00am. Solo racers may start prior to 8:00am as long as they inform Terry (Race Director) and/or Julie (Volunteer Coordinator) prior to starting. Aid stations will not be available before 8:00 am.

Where is race packet pickup?
Runners may pick up their shirts and race numbers at the Kal-Haven Trail on 10th Street (where the race starts) on Saturday, March 27th, 2010:
• Solo runners between 7:00 AM and 7:45 AM
• Teams between 7:30 AM and 8:50 AM

Is parking available at the start, finish, and exchange points (Relay)?
Limited parking is available at the trail head off 10th Street. Participants are encouraged to carpool and should try to limit to one car per Relay team (as applicable). Limited parking is available at some of the exchange points but we recommend you coordinate transportation and drop off to these locations where possible. Additional parking is available at the finish line.

What is the surface of the Kal-Haven Trail?
The trail is surfaced with a crushed limestone. This surface is very easy on the legs; but it has been Terry’s experience when racing on this surface that his mile pace is at least 15 seconds slower per mile than on asphalt courses.

Will chip timing be used for this race?
No, team and ultra runner results are based on the actual elapsed time from the official start in Kalamazoo.

Will there be aid stations for this event?
At a minimum we will have aid stations at the 5 team exchange points along the trail. If we have enough volunteers there will be additional aid stations. We encourage solo runners to carry at least one water bottle. There are water pumps approximately every 4 miles along the trail.

Do I have to wear a race number?
Yes, this is your Kal-Haven Trail pass for the day. Without the number you may be stopped and asked for a trail pass.

My check hasn’t cleared the bank, how do I know if you have received my registration?
Please e-mail Terry if you have any concerns as he does not turn the checks over to the club treasurer until the day after the race.

Team Relay Instructions
What are the relay leg exchanges?
10th St. to 6th St. - 3.9 miles
6th St. to Beehive Farm (.5 mile West of Kendal) - 6.0 miles
Beehive Farm to Bloomingdale - 7.7 miles
Bloomingdale to Grand Junction - 5.9 miles
Grand Junction to Kibbie - 6.5 miles
Kibbie to South Haven - 3.6 miles

Where is the Beehive Farm?
The now closed Beehive Farm is located about ½ mile West of Kendal on county road 388.

How are the runner relay exchanges accomplished?
Teams are on the honor system, there is no baton. Each runner completing a relay leg must make physical contact with the team member running the next relay leg of the race.

Do all the team members have to be at the start line (10th street)?
No, but someone working with the team has to get race numbers to team members prior to their relay leg. The race number is their trail pass for the day.

What if we only have five runners?
One of the five runners will need to run a second leg.

May our team split one or more of the relay legs so our runners have shorter
distances to run?

No, each relay leg must be completed by one runner (exception, see injured runner).

What if one of our team members becomes injured during a relay leg?
Another team member may finish the relay leg of the injured runner; but the injured runner may not run another relay leg.

One of our team members has a number written with “last runner”, what does this mean?
It is important for the team member running the last leg to South Haven to wear this number. This is how we will identify your team for the results.

Will each leg of the Relay be timed?
No, teams will only receive an overall time for the entire Relay distance.
