Running is our Passion; Races are our Stage
Jay Campbell
· In December 2003 WMU announced the elimination of their Men’s Cross Country and Track & Field Teams.
· In October 2004 WMU will be hosting their annual Campus Classic 5K.
In the months following the announcement of the elimination of XC/T&F I often pondered how I should react to these two events and to WMU as an entity. I have no formal connection to WMU other than living in this community for 50 years. And I have no particular history with the WMU running community (although I gave them money for the Press Box at Kanley despite being repeatly kicked out of Oakland Gym by Coach Shaw).
However, I do have a strong affection for all-things-running. And so it was a blow to the gut when a legendary program such as Western’s was cut completely without giving the alumni or the Kalamazoo running community a chance to propose alternatives. I seriously considered boycotting all WMU events, but that was too easy (being an alumnus of two schools that have produced more NFL quarterbacks than WMU has produced teachers (OK....maybe that’s a slight exaggeration)). So I really like the idea being proposed by Peter Livingstone-McNelis, President of Bring Back Track, for the October Campus Classic.
Peter’s idea is to have as many people as possible enter the Campus Classic race and run with the “Save our Sports” T-shirts. You have probably seen these shirts. They even made it on National TV during the WMU Basketball game televised by ESPN. We will swamp the start line with SOS clad runners and we will dominate the awards!
You can purchase a shirt at Gazelle Sports or you can buy a shirt from Peter at the start line. Bring your $5!
Think about joining us in this statement on October 16!
